Resubmission Unit 57 Assignment 3 - Mr cooper

Critically Evaluate their(our) own work:

My photoshoot I believe went well, as I had a plan and I followed that plan the whole way through the process of the shoot. I received great audience feedback and I was happy with the feedback as it linked to the purpose of the photoshoot style. I was Influenced by Eugene Richards somber style, therefore I encouraged myself to use his style throughout my photos but I used a school environment. This shows Richards used poverty places. But I decided to use a school environment which is upbeat and a daily, friendly place to be; however I incorporated Richards somber colours to give the environment a more textured look and how school can be seen in so many different ways due to colour. Personally, I believe the shoot could not have gone better, as I had all the equipment ready such as the DLSR camera in place, I used the settings such as aperture and shutter speed to increase the professional standard of the photograph. The audience feed back stage was important as it is the truth being told, everyone has to show their feelings towards your photos and I did not want my photos to be confusing or give off the wrong impressions. Therefore, it is vital the photographs had a clear, understanding style to let the audience have a detailed understanding of your photos. The only problem in which I encountered was trying to choose what to shoot, it took me a long time to think about where and who I wanted in my photographs. I brain stormed and realised the best option was to do a school environment, as personally I am at school every day so I know the environment extremely well. I think if you know somewhere well and you want to show people your perspective, you should choose a location wisely. However, I choose the school location but the lunch kanteen to show how children eat, pay and socialise at lunch. Therefore, I overcame my problem which was coming up with an idea and I overcame it by brainstorming and asking people what they think I should do such as my tutor. The elements which went well include, the mood board, researching documentary photographers and conveying the message to the audience showing them what my photographs mean. I believe once I completed the research, it was clear to make the mood board on whose images I liked the most, after researching three photographers all having completely different work; I realised from the beginning that I liked Eugene Richards style and I used his images for my mood board. Richards has an unique style, which I believe shows daily events in such a textured way and I was inspired to do the same. Also, conveying the message to the audience went well, as I was able to express my feelings about the photos to them and clearly stated what the emotions you get from looking at the photos. I wanted my photos to show school but in a different way, as schools are vibrant but can also be dull- and I wanted to do the opposite show that it is vibrant but in black and white. It is still vibrant through black and white due to the brightness used and exposure. When I edited my photos I used Photoshop an editing software, I changed my photos all into black and white somber colours to show that school is a happy place but behind the colours there is meaning to the environment. Also, I increased or decreased the brightness and exposure to see what conveyed the message the most to the audience. I also used saturation to give the pictures some effect of deep or lighter effects. Therefore, I used many technical aspects on my work to increase the message of school life how it can be a happy place but also a sad place. I wanted to show the audience that my pictures are happy due to the environment and school is a happy place to be, but I wanted my pictures to convey a message in black and white which makes people think of sadness. However, my message is showing happiness and sadness due to the school lunches being the sad part as not very many people like school lunches. But the happy part shows the environment and the students communicating all together at a table. My planning was effective because it shows I stuck to my idea once I researched and brainstormed. Also, I did all the research before the photoshoot so  I knew exactly what my shoot was on. Therefore, it was easy to choose who I wanted to research and who would suit my style best. The planning was a great part of the shoot as it allowed you to be imaginative and creative with your ideas and to see which one is best for the shoot and the style that you want to use.

This photo shows how effective my work was, as I able to follow a style and capture a photograph following the style I choose. This photograph I feel links to Eugene Richards past work for example, I feel it shows daily activities and Richards shows daily activities through his work all the time. For example, this image goes well with his image which shows communication between a mother and a baby; therefore I have shown in my photograph not only the style but also the communication technique of a daily essential.

Moreover, the photo below I also feel was effective as it supports how well the photoshoot went and also shows I followed the style of Richards. I believe this image shows somber colours, but contradicts itself as I have shown a boy showing his back towards the camera, which would normally give the message of a rude attitude. But the image compared to Richards picture of the mother holding her starving baby links, as my image shows how a boy has the ability to decide on what food he wants to eat with a selection. But the less fortunate do not have anything, which we can see through Richard's image of the mother cradling her baby as she can't afford any food for him.

Also, this image is effective as it shows the audience a school environment and how lucky the students are to have such a high tech environment. Therefore, I feel this is effective as it shows how Richard's past photographs of daily environments do not show a privileged and educated school environment, whereas my image portrays how this generation are very lucky with the resources and education they receive. The busy lunch queue also provides an effect on the photo which can be compared to Richard's photo of the mother crying and holding her baby son, this is a comparison and links well as the style is similar due to the somber colours but I have shown a daily environment which proves to be a happy place and very busy with the school community. However, Richards photo shows how the mother is devastated she can not give her son the education which is best for him, therefore she is thinking of the worst which could happen to her son in the future years if he does not receive a good education. Therefore, this proves that my style is the same but I am showing the difference between a well educated, school environment using richards style and comparing my images to his past images in the media.

My images proved how effective the photoshoot went but also how effective my messages are in the images, they can show many meanings, like Richards is able to do it  through his imagery. I have compared my images to his inspiring images which can give off many messages to the audience. Therefore, my work was effective down to the messages being portrayed through the imagery and editing skills used. Also, when taking these images I was able to keep comparing back to Richards images which I feel related well to my images. This highlights the images show an effect not only does it show me the effect but also my audience due to the feedback and questions answered. On the other hand I believe that the comparisons are clearly linked to my chosen photographer style and his relevant past and contemporary images. Richards images give off many different messages  and in my photos I have tried to compare my messages to Richards photography; I have used a theme which involves a daily activity which most schools experience known as communication over lunch. Therefore, my style has shown a comparison to Richards images through the somber colours and messages being shown to the audience. However, photographs can be conveyed in anyway the audience wants to see the image, this shows that it is vital when comparing to show the different messages clearly, as my messages prove similar messages to Richards which was the point to the photoshoot and the evaluation. When comparing it is important to show how effective my work is and how it compares to my chosen photographer’s work.

To conclude, I believe the shoot went well ,as well as the audience feedback which was very good and the comments I recieved on my photos I was happy with. Also, the questionnaires I gave out were answered honestly and I am grateful for this.  Lastly, my photos I have shown how effective they are and I have illustrated my comparisons to Richard's work, who’s style I was inspired by.
