Unit 57: Assignment 3: People and Places: Evaluation:

Critically Evaluate their(our) own work:

My photo shoot I believe went well, as I had a plan and I followed that plan the whole way through the process of the shoot. I received great audience feedback and I was happy with the feedback as it linked to the purpose of the photo shoot style. I was Influenced by Eugene Richards somber style, therefore I encouraged myself to use his style throughout my photos but I used a school environment. This shows Richards used poverty places. But I decided to use a school environment which is upbeat and a daily, friendly place to be; however I incorporated Richards somber colors to give the environment a more textured look and how school can be seen in so many different ways due to color. Personally, I believe the shoot could not have gone better, as I had all the equipment ready such as the DSLR camera in place, I used the settings such as aperture and shutter speed to increase the professional standard of the photograph. The audience feed back stage was important as it is the truth being told, everyone has to show their feelings towards your photos and I did not want my photos to be confusing or give off the wrong impressions. Therefore, it is vital the photographs had a clear, understanding style to let the audience have a detailed understanding of your photos. The only problem in which I encountered was trying to choose what to shoot, it took me a long time to think about where and who I wanted in my photographs. I brain stormed and realised the best option was to do a school environment, as personally I am at school every day so I know the environment extremely well. I think if you know somewhere well and you want to show people your perspective, you should choose a location wisely. However, I choose the school location but the lunch canteen to show how children eat, pay and socialise at lunch. Therefore, I overcame my problem which was coming up with an idea and I overcame it by brainstorming and asking people what they think I should do such as my tutor. The elements which went well include, the mood board, researching documentary photographers and conveying the message to the audience showing them what my photographs mean. I believe once I completed the research, it was clear to make the mood board on whose images I liked the most, after researching three photographers all having completely different work; I realised from the beginning that I liked Eugene Richards style and I used his images for my mood board. Richards has an unique style, which I believe shows daily events in such a textured way and I was inspired to do the same. Also, conveying the message to the audience went well, as I was able to express my feelings about the photos to them and clearly stated what the emotions you get from looking at the photos. I wanted my photos to show school but in a different way, as schools are vibrant and I wanted to do the opposite show that it is vibrant but in black and white. It is still vibrant through black and white due to the brightness used and exposure. When I edited my photos I used Photoshop an editing software, I changed my photos all into black and white somber colors. Also, I increased or decreased the brightness and exposure to see what conveyed the message the most to the audience. I also used saturation to give the pictures some effect of deep or lighter effects. Therefore, I used many technical aspects on my work to increase the message of school life how it can be a happy place but also a sad place. I wanted to show the audience that my pictures are happy due to the environment and school is a happy place to be, but I wanted my pictures to convey a message in black and white which makes people think of sadness. However, my message is showing happiness and sadness due to the school lunches being the sad part as not very many people like school lunches. But the happy part shows the environment and the students communicating all together at a table. My planning was effective because it shows I stuck to my idea once I researched and brainstormed. Also, I did all the research before the photo shoot so  I knew exactly what my shoot was on. Therefore, it was easy to choose who I wanted to research and who would suit my style best. The planning was a great part of the shoot as it allowed you to be imaginative and creative with your ideas and to see which one is best for the shoot and the style that you want to use. To conclude, I believe the shoot went well as well as the audience feedback which was very good and the comments I received on my photos  was happy with. Also, the questionnaires I gave out were answered honestly and I am grateful for this.
