Assignment 2: people and Places: Photos: Title Jcoss Lunch queue: Theme queing, paying, eating, socilising

Introduction:
I took my pictures in a school setting, a school setting is colourful and a vibrant place. However, I wanted to show what people feel when eating, queuing and paying when in a school environment. Not everyone likes school food, the majority dislike school food, therefore the black and white sombre colours enhance the discouraging behaviour towards school food. I also used brightness and contrast to increase certain aspects within the photo such as the chairs are brighter to give off a the darker dominator within the photos. I also used exposure to give the image more light so the black and white sombre colours can be conveyed to the audience. I was interested in Eugene Richards documentary photography and I feel i have used his style of black and white within my photos. Also he shows throughout his photos daily life, to which I have been inspired by the style to copy daily school life activities known as queuing, paying, eating and socialising in the lunch canteen.

Message communicated in photographs:

I want my photographs to communicate teenagers school life, how they line up for school lunches, how they pay for school lunches and how they respond to the food. The message needs to clearly show a school environment to the audience. The reason I want the pictures to be black and white is because Eugene Richards using black and white photographs and I like his style, therefore I want to use the same black and white technique for my photos. The message in my photos with show the audience an ordinary school lunch atmosphere.

Assignment 2: Unit 57: People and Places: Health and Safety Risk Assessment.

Health and Safety Risk Assessment:

When taking photos, many complications and hazards can arise. I will be taking pictures in a school lunch queue setting, therefore there are many hazards which can cause harm; therefore we need to prevent the harm from happening.
The complications and hazards which could unfold during my photo shoot range from minor hazards to major hazards such as:
  • Steam could ruin the camera and equipment being used.
  • Wires which connect the hot plate to the kitchen, people and I could trip over these wires.
  • Some people may not be allowed in a photo.
  • Food could go on the equipment resulting in damaged property.
  • Health reasons such as Epilepsy, you don't know who suffers from flashes or lights.
  • People pushing the lunch queue resulting in damaged equipment.
These are the complications and hazards which could take place during my photo shoot, however there has been a health and safety risk assessment done due to the type of setting. But anything could happen, therefore it is important to be careful at all times when using equipment near food, students and in a busy packed area. To conclude it is important to know what you are doing before taking the pictures to make sure everything is in place such as no students being in the photo if they have health issues.

Re submission: Unit 51: Blogger comments (Morgan Jays Blog)

Also, the magazine meets the brief as it meets the design constraints due to the typical lifestyle magazine layout. But on the other hand the margin should be in place for editing to see how near everything is to the next page. However, the leftover white space could include quotes, puffs or sub headings to make the layout even clearer for the audience. The first page middle quote, could be more spaced out by making the columns narrower; as quotes stand out when they are not squashed between two columns. Therefore, the overall typography is good for the audience and the genre because it suits the lifestyle magazine type. However, minor things such as the quote being made bigger, these type of things need a bit of tidying up to have the best possible lifestyle magazine.

Evidence
Has this been met

Selection of Material- Is the material appropriate for the genre/reader of magazine?

Yes, the material and the genre are appropriate for the reader of the magazine; because it supplies an interview with a celebrity on their lifestyle and the magazine is based on lifestyle. Also, it draws the reader in especially young teenagers who read, ‘True Magazine’, as it shows how a normal person rose to fame and how it has changed their life rapidly, from being a normal, non-recognisable person known as,’ Tiffany Fox’, to someone who gets paparazzi following her every move!
Yes.
It has been met, because the reader who reads this type of magazine, known as a lifestyle magazine has been drawn in due to the appropriate genre and material.

Audience appeal- How and why does it appeal/interest the target audience?

The Article, interests the audience because it is an interview based on Tiffany’s life. Also, many people look up to her due to her achievements in her young lifetime, therefore it appeals to the target audience because people and fans want to know more about Miss Fox. However, it appeals mainly to young people as it motivates them to go for their dream like Tiffany did, she started young and has become successful young. Tiffany draws the audience in by explaining her lifestyle, which many people want to know and become more familiar with, due to her lifestyle achievements.
Yes.
It appeals to the audience as they are interested in the genre. Therefore, the target audience has got the satisfaction of the audience appeal as it meets the requirements of a lifestyle magazine containing an interview with a celebrity who came from nothing to something.

Relevance- Is it relevant to the brief (what you were ask to do) as well as correct content for magazine and reader?

Yes, this article containing an interview is relevant to the brief as it has met the requirements. Firstly, it is a lifestyle magazine containing an interview on a lifestyle of a famous celebrity. Also, the content for the magazine is correct for a lifestyle magazine. The questions asked in the interview link to the brief as the questions are based on lifestyle. Moreover, the criteria for the reader have been met, because the magazine meets the lifestyle and interview points, therefore the, Relevance’, has met the brief.

The Article is accurate with its layout and information. However, there are a few mistakes within the writing which can be solved. But the article is arcuate based on the criteria; as the magazine has met the lifestyle criteria of interviewing a celebrity.
Yes./No
Yes it is accurate as it is readable in a way which is clear and presentable. But no at the same time as the text needed some grammar and punctuation changes made; as it was lacking for example quotation marks to show when the celebrity was answering the questions.
Balance – Is the article showing a balanced view?

Yes, the article is showing a balanced view, because Tiffany who is being interviewed tells what her life was like; before she became famous. Therefore, the article is balanced due to the information being conveyed throughout the article. The view portrays two sides to her story of rising to fame which shows a balanced view.
Yes.
Yes the article does show a balanced view as the celebrity is being truthful with the editor. She is sharing her views on life before rising to fame and her thoughts on life during fame which is showing the audience honest views. Also, the audience can relate to the article as so many people can rise to fame with nothing and becoming a somebody which shows the target audience that the genre is very much related to the type of magazine. Also, it is a good balanced interview as it does not drag on or go on about irrelevant things. It focuses on the main life events whilst being famous; not only does it focus on the positives it also focuses on the negatives during a famous person's life.

Assignment 2: Unit 57 people and Places: Rights of the photographer when shooting in public places:

Rights of the photographer when shooting in public places:

Everyone has a right to not be in  a photograph for many reasons ranging from, religious reasons, health reasons and confidential reasons. When shooting in public places it is important to ask if you can take a photo of them. For example, when people go traveling, they like to take pictures to remember what they have seen and to share with others their photographs. However, some places restrict photos being taken for many reasons, one being they want people to visit the site without others showing them what it looks like through a photograph. As for a photographer their rights vary in public places. For example, if someone has health issues such as Epilepsy, a photographer could cause harm by using the flash this could result in an Epileptic fit, this would be a con. However, a pro could be experiencing a theme or style for yourself without capturing it. The photographer has the right to capture what they like in certain places as long as you ask permission, for example if you visited a village in a foreign country you would have to ask if you could take photos of the people sitting outside their homes. Another example, would be in a train station you can not just go up to a homeless person and a take a photo, firstly this is intimidating and rude; therefore you would have to ask. A photographer has many pros and cons when venturing out with their camera. Another issue could be, the photographer wants to take a picture of a temple but is not allowed, therefore the photographer has to respect the rights of the temple and not take the photo. Also, the photographer has to be extremely careful when photographing in public places due to protection laws such as child protection. It is always best the photographer asks before taking a photo in public places due to people not wanting to be in the photo for a confidential reason such as, they could be famous and do not want to be spotted somewhere which could cause issues for them.

Assignment 2 Unit 57 People and Places Research:

Eugene Richards:

Richards is a documentary photographer who is and American documentary photographer, he uses a lot of black and white color to show the audience his photography. He is a photographer based in New York City who travels to take photographs documenting themes to the audience. Richards is involved with the Magnum photos company who are based in London, Tokyo and Japan, he documents what is going on in the world for himself and the company.

This image taken by Richards captures a unique style which is being documented so vividly, it is showing a mother and her baby; unfortunately the mother can not provide for her baby as we can see due to the lack of nutrition the baby is receiving. I feel this style is a theme which everyone in the world needs to witness to make a difference and help different communities.

Another image by Richards which is in a style which is also black and white in which he portrays his images. I feel this photo is documenting a father screaming at a young child, due to the sad colors. I like this style as I feel Richards is documenting world issues which we should all be aware of.

Tim Hetherington:

Hetherington was a documentary photographer from England, he was well known for writing books and best known for winning the Jury prize for Restrepo documentary. Unfortunately, he lost his life when serving in the Libyan civil war when he was hit by a Motar shell. His style is mixed between using color and sad somber colors such as black and white. Hetherington, documents his service in the army so vividly and shows what his fellow comrades go through.

This image I feel strongly about, as Hetherington is showing the world that in less economic developed countries, young children are allowed to have guns. Whereas in more economic developed countries, you have to have a license to hold a gun. Therefore, this documents the style of some people are restricted due to the lack of skills and education they are given due to where they are born.

This photo shows how hard it is to be in the army, you have to have the correct balance of sleep, food and rest. Hetherington is documenting the style of what army life is like, it is hard core for not only the soldiers but also the families hoping their loved ones are all fine. The style of the photo portrays that his rest is so important, that the bed frame or thin duvet or lighting will not even wake him as he is use to the conditions.

Stephanie Sinclair:
Sinclair is an American photojournalist and documentary photographer, she likes to base her photography on human rights and gender, as in today's modern society gender equality is a massive issue. Her work is well known due to the style and themes she focuses on.

This image shows a young girl and boy who have just got married, they look extremely unhappy. The boy is older than the girl. However, this photo shows this girl wants to be like other girls who wants to learn and have an education before becoming a wife and mother at such a young age. But her country and religion have made alternative arrangements for her to become a young mother and wife. Sinclair shows how unaware we are globally. We do not take into consideration what happens to these young couples, by Sinclair documenting this we are shown a style of discrimination and no human rights to back out.

This image also shows human rights not in place, a crowded hospital room, unhygienic with no wards separated for children and adults. This style shows the lack of tools and rooms the hospital have, they have to cram everyone in one room; even if it means people on the floor. This shows how unequal society is. This style is a style I feel strongly about, everyone deserves the best health care as health is the most important thing we have.

Task 3: Mrs Frost: Be able to design and produce page layout to meet a brief- MAGAZINE

For task three the task was to putt our images and script together. We had to have our edited photos in place to put in our magazine, we also had to make sure our script fitted onto the double page spread. I used many tools to produce the best magazine I possibly could. From using quotes in boxes to make the magazine stand out like a professional magazine, to making the questions bold to stand out. The Design, format and convention of the magazine was important to focus on to produce the double pages read magazine. Lastly, the task was to produce a double page spread magazine; and I produced a lifestyle magazine based on a reality star having a hobby for healthy eating and cooking.
